Did you know that the hotel located near the corner of S. 13th & College Avenue has been around since 1964? While the name of the hotel has changed several times, the hotel basically remained the same for many years, but during The Gateway to Milwaukee’s recent visit, with Joe Davison, General Manager, we noticed an almost completely renovated space, with a contemporary hotel lobby area, new restaurant, conference rooms, plus renovated hotel rooms and suites.
We wanted to speak with Joe particularly about the new restaurant, Tavern on 13th as you’ll be able to sample some of their specialties at our upcoming Taste of the Gateway in August.
Joe, how is your Restaurant, Tavern on 13th, different from other restaurants in the Gateway to Milwaukee Region?
We decided to come up with an idea for a restaurant that hotel guests and people living in the area could really enjoy. We decided on Tavern on 13th because we knew people in the area enjoy a hometown casual atmosphere with some great new food choices; you know that type of place – around-the corner restaurant/bar where everyone in the neighborhood likes to meet up.
We want everyone to know that the restaurant is separate from the hotel and has two entrances, and we are pleased to offer food options that no one else has on their menus here in the airport area. We offer huge portions at reasonable prices and great daily specials. We offer some unique menu items including what we refer to as our “Sidewinder Mountains.” An offering of two pounds of hot, sidewinder potatoes, thick cut and made-to-order. There are many variations on the sidewinder, but our most popular is the Buffalo Chicken Sidewinder plate. Whiskey fingers are also unique and the sauce is made from scratch right here on premise. Wednesday is “Taco Night,” where you’ll receive an authentic taco for just $1.25. Thursday’s are our “Wing Nights” and you’ll get full wings for just $1.25. Everything on our menu is affordable (the most expensive item is $13.00) with many orders are large enough for two or for someone to take home for another meal.
Our bar is full service, with 8 featured signature drinks.
One thing that businesses in the area may not know is that we offer delivery of breakfasts, lunch and dinner to businesses within the Gateway Region usually within a 5 mile radius of our restaurant.
Summer is just around the corner. Will you be doing anything special at the restaurant this summer?
Our new patio space is ready for the summer season, and we are excited to be offering an outdoor area with restaurant seating. The outdoor patio will also have seating around our new fire pit. We will be adding daily activities and a large outdoor space for future car shows, bike shows and other outdoor fun. We are planning some indoor activities as well.
Does your hotel still have event spaces?
Yes, of course! Together, our event spaces can host up to 1,000 people. The ballroom is our largest space and can accommodate up to 800 people. Two other spaces can host from as little as 20 people up to 200 people for meetings and events. The ballroom used to be an outdoor garden space but was enclosed at some point. We have plans to continue to renovate that space, and we are thinking about creating the feeling of being outdoors in that area by bringing in live plants into the ballroom again. We will also be adding a stage for a band and/or speaker’s area. That space has been great for larger weddings, anniversaries, Quinceaneras and seminars.
We have a full catering menu and can do most anything in-house from flowers to music, to table décor, settings and chair coverings and have a mimosa fountain and chocolate fountain for special occasions. We are here to please our clients and enjoy turning our ballroom into their event space. If someone comes to us and doesn’t have ideas of what they need or want for their particular event, we have many visual samples that we are happy to show them, including what we’ve done for past events. We work with our clients and can create a very simple event or something quite elaborate, depending on the client’s budget. We have a pre-function space, too, so that a couple planning to marry can have both their ceremony and the reception at the hotel if they wish.
We are excited about this complete renovation and to now be open to the public at our Tavern on 13th Restaurant. We are very much looking forward to participating in this year’s Taste of the Gateway sampling event on August 15.

Breakfast served from 6:00 am – 10:00 am
Lunch service begins at 11:00 am and service continues with dinner until 11:00 pm daily
The bar is open daily until 2:00 a.m.
