Business Spotlight – The Dentists South Shore

We recently met with Drs. Tom Charapata, Christian Harteau, Mike Golovin and some of their staff at The Dentists South Shore to talk about their dental practice located here in the Gateway to Milwaukee area.

How did your dental practice get started in this area?

“I began at a location near the airport on S. Howell Avenue and Euclid back in 1984.”  Dr. Charapata told us.  “I was a recent Marquette University Dental School graduate at that time,”  Dr. Tom grew up in Cudahy and was in practice with his brother Frank until his passing in 1998.  He is an active member of the Wisconsin Dental Association and the American Dental Association.  Dr. Tom’s practice revolves around building a trusting and sincere relationship with his patients using warmth and humor mixed in to create a relaxed experience while helping his patients.

Tell us more about yourselves and the dental practice

Christian Harteau, D.D.S. is a Milwaukee native with a Doctorate of Dental Surgery (DDS) from Marquette University School of Dentistry.  Dr. Christian said, “I began working with my uncle, Dr. Tom Charapata, as an assistant to him prior to joining the practice as a dentist.”

“I speak at various schools throughout the area and volunteer for the Give Kids a Smile program at Marquette University as well as the Southern Wisconsin Center where I provide dental care to special needs patients.”  He was honored with the Community Dentistry and Dental Public Health Award for his interest and outstanding achievement in dental public health.

Dr. Christian has a great deal of interest in the aesthetics of dentistry and mentioned.“ I feel that dentistry is an artistic endeavor and it brings me great satisfaction to be able to design a new smile for my patients,” he replied.   “The best thing that I can do as a dentist is to give someone back their self-confidence through my work as a dentist.”

Michael Golovin, DMD –  Dr. Golovin graduated from the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry where he earned his Doctorate of Dental Medicine (DMD).  Dr. Golovin immigrated to Milwaukee in 1991 with his family and he grew up speaking English and Russian.  After graduation from Dental school, he decided to move back to Wisconsin to practice dentistry in his hometown of Milwaukee.  Dr. Golovin is a very engaging dentist and creates a rapport with people not only in his day to day practice but also with the business community in and around the Gateway to Milwaukee area.  He told us, “I enjoy getting involved in organizations like the Gateway to Milwaukee where I can share my ideas and information to enhance this area of Milwaukee.”  “But most of all, I really enjoy helping patients feel at ease in the dental chair and feel this is my greatest achievement.”  “Whether it be calming a worried child or aiding in the care of an adult through sedation, my mission is to make dentistry a comfortable experience.”

What does your office offer in the way of Dental Services?

Together these three dentists offer 50 years of combined dental experience.  The office has a total of 22 employees, which includes 6 dental hygienists and 6 dental assistants.

We offer comprehensive dental care with many specialty procedures.  Nervous patients can feel calm knowing that we offer sedation that makes dentistry a breeze.  Clear braces are also offered at The Dentists South Shore when the situation is right.  A very special part of our practice can be found when a crown (cap) is needed.  We have a CEREC machine that can create a crown in one visit.  Without impressions (putty) or a temporary, getting a new crown is simple.

Whether it be routine cleanings and fillings or replacing teeth with dental implants, The doctors at The Dentists South Shore are able to restore your oral health.

Why do you feel it’s important to be located in the Airport Gateway Region?

We feel that this is a growing area with great people.  We love coming to work and hearing patient’s stories and experiences.  Knowing patients for many years is the greatest part of dentistry.  People in the area know us and refer their friends and family to The Dentists South Shore.  “We really love working in the Gateway to Milwaukee area so much so that we have expanded our practice adding a new location at 5007 S. Howell Avenue, Suite 315,” stated Dr. Golovin.

How does your business stand out from other dental practices?

Beyond having dentists who strive to make every visit a comfortable and easy-going experience, we, at The Dentists South Shore participate in continuing education to further our understanding of dentistry and give better patient care. All of us stay current with the latest technology, continue learning about sedation dentistry and new techniques and offer more comprehensive services like dental implants and orthodontics.

The dentists told us that they always strive to do their very best.  We discovered that M Magazine has listed the Dentists South Shore as top dentists for the last few years.
