Opening its doors in Minneapolis, Minnesota on April 1st, 1954, M. A. Mortenson Company is a privately held corporation owned by the Mortenson family. At its inception, founder M. A. Mortenson, Sr. established two objectives for the company’s future: to sustain steady growth by increasing its revenue annually and to strive to be profitable in every year of its existence. The hard work and long hours expended in those early years paid off as the business thrived and as projects grew progressively larger and more complex.

Today, led by M. A. Mortenson, Jr., the company operates as a diversified construction organization, offering customer-centric services in general contracting, construction management, program management, design-build, project development, and “turn-key” development.

Mortenson has distinguished itself in the construction industry by providing services based on its values; trust, safety, service, responsibility, stewardship and teamwork. Our team members truly believe in serving our customer’s interests and having a strong, partnered relationship with each project’s owner, designer, engineer, and subcontractors.

In 1969 M. A. Mortenson Company joined the ranks of the builders of Engineering News Record’s Top 400 list, a numerical ranking by dollar volume of the nation’s largest contractors. In 1990 Mortenson reached ENR’s list of top 50 contractors, and has remained within the top 50 every year since. In ENR’s most recent list, Mortenson was ranked the 27th largest general builder in the country.

Current project operations extend into 47 states and a number of select international locations. The company is involved in a wide variety of commercial building types ranging from corporate office facilities and healthcare projects, high tech manufacturing and network/data facilities, to sports, hospitality and educational facilities. In addition, Mortenson has specialized in a variety of industrial facilities types, from hydroelectric, wind and combustion turbine energy production to water/waste water treatment and pulp and paper processing. Our project costs range from less than $1 million to more than $300 million.

Mortenson maintains its company headquarters in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and supports full service offices in Chicago, IL ; Denver, CO ; Milwaukee, WI ; Phoenix, AZ; and Seattle, WA. Smaller customer-based offices are staffed as they are needed around the the world in order to serve the unique relationships we enjoy with many of our long-term customers.

Mortenson is characterized by its people—honest, hardworking, professional and energetic. Working together, Mortenson team members, through their dedication and integrity, have formed a collaborative relationship with owners, architects, engineers and subcontractors, enhancing the company’s reputation for superior workmanship and performance.
